My cat has a bad infection on his leg, I can't take him to vet, what can i do?

I know a lot of you are going to say, you owe your cat the medical attention he needs just bring him in, but its not that easy right now...Here's the story: The cat got into a fight about 2 weeks ago with (i am pretty sure) the neighbors dog. He has 2 lacerations high up on his leg, one mid-way, one up on shoulder. He limped around for the first week and a half, then it burst open and A LOT of pus came out, his blood isn't even red, its pinkish orangish...He doesn't limp on it anymore, but i can tell it still bothers him a bit, and pus is still coming out bad. The nearest vet is over an hour drive away, I have no car anymore, and am living in poverty so I couldn't afford the bill (he does not accept payments on the bills anymore). I LOVE my cat and have cleaned it the best I can with hot soapy water, but I don't know what else I can do for him, I'm not sure whats safe to use and its not getting better yet. I really really don't want to take him out back if i can help it, I don't think I have the guts to do it anyway unless he was suffering that badly..has anyone treated such a bad infection at home before and can help me? I know leukemia (sp?) and other things are a danger to him to right now, but one thing at a time... please help if you can, any advice is greatly appreciated. thank-you
