Is it wrong to have piercings?

Leviticus 19:28 says "Don not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves." People often use this verse to say it is wrong to get piercings but I don't see it in this. I suppose since piercing is putting a hole in your body it can qualify as cutting but no one I know has got a piercing for the dead whatever that means. I only have my ears pierced one time in each ear. I am a jail minister as you see from my display name and my kids at Juvenile Hall were telling me I should let my ears close up to be in compliance with the Word of God. It is very important to follow the Word of God in every aspect and not make exceptions just because you might not like a rule. Like I said, I don't see how piercings are forbidden in this verse. If anyone knows or can explain how/why piercings are forbidden in this verse or any other verse I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!
