Does the flu get worse if you have Leukemia? (10 pts best answer)?
There are many different kinds of Leukemia. Leukemia is a cancer of the white blood cells. It can affect your B cells, your T cells, or both. Let's say you had a leukemia of your B cells. B cells are the cells that make antibodies. If they were defective, you would not make enough antibodies to fight an infection. If you had a leukemia of your T cells, they would not mature and would not attack the bacteria or virus infected cells in your body. The misconception is that if you have more of them, then they will probably fight an infection better. The truth is, the white blood cells never go through all the developmental stages, therefore they are nonfunctional and cannot fight an infection. Therefore, people with leukemia are actually immunosuppressed.
